Happy New Year! I hope everybody had a lovely Christmas and New Year! Mine was filled with too much food and friends and family… couldn’t of asked anything more!

For my first tutorial in 2014 I am going to be writing about security for your WordPress site, nobody wants hackers to destroy their blog they have worked tirelessly on and this is how to help make sure it doesn’t happen to you!

The first security issue I would like to bring to your attention is the use of admin as your username. In April 2013 there was a massive hacker attack on WordPress sites, the hackers where aiming at WordPress sites which had an admin account so it is definitely more secure to not have your username as admin, change it to something unique you’ll be safer for it!

In order to do this click on ‘Users’ in the right hand column and delete the admin username:

Next add a new user by click adding new and filling in these details:

You can also strengthen up your password, in order to do this you need a mixture of numbers and letters in your password. There are several easy ways to remember to do this. You can change letters to numbers for example an e could be a 3, o to a 0, or a p to 9. You can also simiply add 123 at the end of the password. It all helps!!

Make sure you update your WordPress, theme and plugins as well, hackers are known for targeting older versions as they are likely to be more easy to hack. Not updating could leave you open to attacks!

Finally, keep a back-up of your site just in case. Set yourself a reminder on you phone for every so often so you back-up regularly or you can download one of these automatic back-up plugins to do the hard work for you, don’t let all your hard work get lost!

Have a lovely week!!
